Bear Lake Comprehensive Management Plan
Utah's Division of Forestry, Fire & State Lands is holding meetings
to hear public input on a Comprehensicve Management Plan for Bear Lake.
The plan will cover all the exposed lakebed between the high water mark
(meander line) and the actual shorline, whether it is front of your
house, the state parks, leased land, or other public access to the lake.
It is vitally important for residents,
homeowners and recreationalists to familiarize themselves with the draft
plan and provide input and comments.
Go to http://www.ffsl.utah.gov/SovLands/bearlake.php
to review the plan and maps.
The meetings are Tues. Aug. 15th in Salt Lake City and Sat. Aug. 19th
in Garden City. Please plan on attending and participating in this very
important step in the management of the sovereign lands of Bear Lake.
Road Construction
U.S. 89 at Garden City, Bear Lake —UDOT
will reconstruct a seven-mile segment from the Bear Lake Summit to Garden
City beginning in March 2005 and lasting until Sept. 2006.
Due to the high volume of recreational traffic expected, UDOT is requiring
its contractor to keep one lane open in each direction from Friday at
3 p.m. through Sunday night. The contractor has informed UDOT it will
attempt to avoid working at all on Fridays. It may mean traveling on
an unpaved surface. Only two or three miles of the road will be worked
on at one time, keeping delays to 10 or 15 minutes most weekends.
Some full road closures will be necessary during off-peak hours.
The main improvements will be adding passing lanes on uphill portions,
flattening a lot of the curves so you'll get much better sight distance,
adding a three-lane section of highway.
• U.S. 89, Logan Canyon — Several old bridges
will be replaced and some minor road-widening will take place with traffic
sometimes restricted to just one lane with delays of 15 to 20 minutes.
UDOT hopes to limit construction — and traffic restrictions —
to one bridge at a time. Construction will begin in June 2005 and last
until Sept. 2006
The new pedestrian underpass near the mouth of Logan Canyon will connect
to an existing trail system on either side of the highway, providing
a safe crossing.
On Tues. March 23rd, 2004, the Amended and Restated Bear
Lake Settlement Agreement was signed by all parties. The agreement
preserves the Bear Lake recovery plan, recognizes the changes necessaary
for the reorganization of the smaller irrigator groups and allocates
the transportation losses to the irrigators and the inadvertant losses
to the lake. This will amount to about 3 inches of water per year..
